On March 14th, 2024, London’s St Columba’s Church of Scotland celebrated the Kazakh Amal holiday with a classical music event featuring Alfia Nakipbekova and Eleonora Bekova of the Bekova Sisters Trio. Despite missing their sister Elvira, the duo performed a candlelit cello and piano recital, highlighting Kazakhstan’s musical heritage. The program included works by Debussy, Britten, Gabrielli, and Ysaÿe, captivating the audience with their emotional depth and musicality. This event, aligning with the themes of renewal and togetherness of the Amal holiday, showcased the international success of Kazakh artists and was warmly received by the Kazakh community and others, celebrating Kazakhstan’s rich musical legacy.



On the occasion of Mukagali Makataev’s (1931-1976) birthday on February 9th, a poet who has become a symbol of Kazakh poetry, and in celebration of International Mother Language Day on February 21st, please join us in welcoming Londoners as they read his poem

British Kazakh Society Annual Dinner held at House of Lords, celebrating Kazakhstan-UK ties

On the 25th of January, the British Kazakh Society hosted its annual New Year dinner at the House of Lords, marking another milestone in the strengthening relationship between Kazakhstan and the UK.
The evening saw addresses by two distinguished ambassadors: His Excellency Magzhan Ilyassov, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the UK, and Her Excellency Kathy Leach, the UK’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan. The event was attended by Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy for Kazakhstan; the Rt Hon Lord Astor of Hever DL, a member of the Chairman’s Advisory Group of the British-Kazakh Society; Lord Brennan KC; Mr. Gani Bekenov, Director of the FFP; Bob Stewart, Chairman of the All-Parliamentary Group on Kazakhstan; among others.
A highlight of the evening was Ambassador Ilyassov’s presentation of the first edition of the Oxford Qazaq Dictionary to Mr Rupert Goodman, Chairman of the British Kazakh Society. This gesture symbolized the ongoing efforts to promote bilateral relations between Kazakhstan and the UK.
Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from Mr Sayasat Nurbek, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Higher Education and Science, who was in London with a delegation to attend the BETT educational exhibition. He delivered an inspiring speech on the bilateral achievements in education between the two nations and highlighted the promising potential for future collaborations in this crucial sector.
The British Kazakh Society, the host of the dinner, was praised for its continuous efforts to promote Kazakhstan’s interests within the UK. The evening was not only a celebration of shared achievements and common goals, but also a testament to the enduring friendship and cooperation between Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom.











This unique event will host approximately 4,000 athletes from over 100 countries, showcasing the rich heritage and athletic prowess of traditional nomadic sports.
The World Nomadic Games is an international competition in ethnic sports. The first three competitions of the World Nomad Games were held in Sholpan Ata (Kyrgyzstan) in 2014, 2016 and 2018. The fourth World Games were organized in 2022 in Iznik, Turkey.
20 specific sports have been approved. 10 of them are officially approved games common to Turkic peoples. The others are similar national games and sports that exist only in each country. For example, there are five types of wrestling. There are Kazakh wrestling, Uzbek wrestling, Kyrgyz wrestling, Turkish Aba wrestling, Korean national wrestling. Athletes compete in intellectual games: togyzkumalak, Turkish mangala, and oware, game played in some African countries, Middle East, and Caribbean.
Like the previous games, the tickets to the 2024 World Nomad Games in Kazakhstan will be free for spectators. However, the opening and closing ceremony will require a ticket.
Competitions are held in «Astana Arena», «Kazanat» hippodrome, Ushkempirov Palace of Martial Arts.
At the same time, a 10-hectare «World of Nomads» ethno-village will be opened near the «Kazanat» hippodrome. There, every visitor can get to know in depth the original culture and traditions of the Kazakh people and other participating countries.
Each region builds its own yurt and widely introduces the cultural and tourist features of the region.
In the open-air setting of the Nomadic Games, visitors will find the Museum of Nomadic Civilization and the City of Craftsmen. The event also includes the «Neo Nomads Fest» urbanism festival, a national food festival, various sports competitions, and ‘aitys’ — a unique form of oral tradition featuring improvised singing and oratory between two participants. These attractions are designed to offer a comprehensive experience of nomadic culture and traditions.

The first edition of the Oxford Qazaq Dictionary, encompassing 60,000 words and spanning 1300 pages, is now published.
It’s a comprehensive Kazakh-English and English-Kazakh dictionary developed using the methodologies and technologies of the Oxford English Dictionary. Over 50 language experts contributed to this four-year project. The dictionary includes updates in Kazakh and English lexicon, especially in areas like modern culture, IT, medicine, economics, finance, and trade. It also contains guides on grammar, pronunciation, and spelling for both languages.
The dictionary integrates the Kazakh language into the Oxford Global Languages platform, linking it with one of the world’s most renowned and authoritative dictionary networks and facilitating its inclusion in the global linguistic community.
