New Kazakh Language and Culture Initiative Unveiled in the Heart of London

On April 27, 2024, a significant cultural event took place in central London with the launch of the Kazakh Speaking Club. This initiative brought together the local Kazakh community and enthusiasts of the Kazakh language.

During the official opening, Ismail Kesici, the chairman of the Kazakh Centre in the UK, and his wife Sholpan highlighted the club’s significance. They emphasized that the club is open not only to the Kazakh diaspora but also to all foreigners interested in learning about Kazakh culture and language. Mr. Kesiсш stressed that such initiatives are crucial not only for the development of the Kazakh language but also for strengthening the bonds of unity and friendship within the Kazakh community in the UK. Sholpan, in her remarks, expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to a fund aimed at supporting those affected by the recent floods in Kazakhstan.

Aliya Qanatkyzy, the head of the Speaking Club, outlined the club’s objectives and plans, inviting everyone interested in learning the Kazakh language, regardless of their proficiency level. Her husband, Steve, shared his experiences of learning Kazakh, acknowledging the challenges but encouraging perseverance.

The event also featured cultural performances by Kazakh students in London, showcasing the rich facets of their heritage. Amina Issagaliyeva performed a traditional dance, «Sylqyldaq,» and Kymbat Madenietkyzy played the «Alqissa» composition by Nurgisa Tlendiyev, delighting the audience. Young television presenter known as Miss Kausar, real name Kaussar Galymzhankyzy, recited a poem by the great Kazakh poet Abai first in native Kazakh, then in English, engaging the attendees with her artistic expression.

Seby Dunn, a member of the UK fan club of global Kazakh star Dimash Qudaibergen, also attended the event and extended congratulations on behalf of the fan club.

The event not only attracted Kazakhs from London but also from other cities like Bournemouth and Cambridge, demonstrating the unity of the Kazakh community in the UK. The Kazakh Speaking Club plans to meet monthly, with details of each gathering to be announced in advance on the Kazakh Centre’s social media channels. This initiative represents a significant step forward in promoting the Kazakh language and culture in the UK and fostering a vibrant community of learners and enthusiasts.
